What to do

4 items
  1. Check which category your products fall into

You can check categories in product management in Seller Center. For products where the category is unclear, compare the rate actually applied in your order details.

  2. Redo profit calculations by category

As a rule of thumb, budget 25–35% of sales for commission + affiliate commission + shipping + returns + ads.

  3. For products that no longer pay off, revisit price or commission rates

Fashion and pet supplies are up 5 points. If your prices were built on the old 7%, your margin may be gone.

  4. Reset affiliate commission rates

A starting point is 10–15%. Typical rates are 12–15% for beauty, 10–12% for women's fashion and 8–12% for electronics.

How the numbers moved after this change

What we can read. Right after the change (week of May 4), GMV fell to ¥859 million, but that was the dip after Japan's Golden Week holidays and can't be separated from the effect of the change. It then recovered for three straight weeks, returning to ¥1.29 billion in the week of May 25 with a Super Sale. At least at the market-wide level, no exodus due to the fee change shows up in the numbers. This chart can't show whether individual shops' margins were squeezed. We measure that through a monthly index question.
